5 RESEARCH TIPS
FOR A SUCCESSFUL
RESPONSIVE DESIGN

Responsive design is much more than just designing a website that adapts to different screen sizes. To ensure a successful responsive design you must deliver an optimal user experience on all devices, but how?

Here you can find some guidelines on how to provide an integrated and continuous experience to your customers across multiple platforms.

# 1 PROVIDE RELEVANT CONTENT

Having different platforms implies accounting for different usage patterns and needs. Users may access your site on the go, and only a few seconds will be available before they shift their attention.

To ensure a successful responsive design, you need to first take a step back and reconsider your content. Think about your product or service, and prioritize the information based on what is most relevant for users. Avoid distracting them with unnecessary information, and keep them focused on the core content and functionalities.

# 2 SIMPLIFY THE NAVIGATION

No matter how complex your product or service is, the goal is to keep it simple for users to navigate and easily find what they need. An intuitive and straight-forward structure will support and guide the user throughout the process without spending too much time on it.

For instance, provide quick access to the most relevant functionalities through bottom navigation, easily reached with only one thumb. Reduce ambiguity by including labels that are clear and guide users through the process. In order to provide a good overview, simplify the amount of steps and allow to keep track of where they are.

When moving from large to small screen sizes, it is important to keep in mind usage and interaction differences. The more the user has to fiddle with their mobile device, the higher chance it will lead to frustration.

Focus on making a comfortable and ergonomic design for users by minimising scrolling and input requirements. Design for comfort, considering the areas that the user can easily reach with one thumb for clickable elements and the size of these targets. When possible, avoid partially hidden navigation and content, and remember: “out of sight, out of mind”.

# 4 PROVIDE FEEDBACK

Communication is key when building a relationship with your users. Supporting them throughout the process will lead to a better experience, particularly in mobile platforms where connections might be unstable and time is particularly limited.

Maintain a fluent experience by giving timely and relevant feedback to your users. This is especially important when completing online purchases, where they need to feel in control of the process.

# 5 AIM FOR BRAND CONSISTENCY

Although the design and navigation might change from platform to platform, it is essential to deliver a consistent experience to users.

Core functionalities and content should be equally accessible and intuitive for users across devices. In addition, the overall look-and-feel of the site must be maintained in order to ensure brand consistency.

Having less space available shouldn’t compromise neither content quality nor user experience. Responsive design should deliver an integrated and positive experience to users, no matter the screen size.
